There are different types of external storage and file sharing services that allow content to be displayed on websites and also allow other resources to be found on your website. It is important to note that putting everything on the host’s server can really take up storage as well.
1. Google Drive
Drive is great because it is easily connectable to WordPress’ admin panel, and it’s the most universally recognizable storage service that allows images and videos to be shown on my website.

- Easy organization
- Quick sharing and easy file sharing
- Works with other Google services (Docs, Sheets, analytics)
- Reduces the need to store files in WordPress
Cons
- Some things require more plugins
- Permissions need to be granted carefully
- May require paid versions of integrations
2. Dropbox
Dropbox is a great eay to send files to your FTP to your website, and it is also compatible with WordPress. WordPress connects to Dropbox and allows files to be embedded, uploaded, and shared, which is great when you have lots of files of content that need to be organized.

- Shares files easy
- Reduces storage used from WordPress host account
- Useful when organization is needed for a large number of files
Cons
- You need an account
- Some plugins require a paid version
- WP integration needs a third-party plugin
- May need FTP to transfer files
3. OneDrive
Microsoft OneDrive is one of the most recognizable means of cloud storage and is used by many institutions and colleges. It’s a great alternative to Drive and is familiar to those that regularly use 365 and 365 services.
Pros
- Useful when submitting docx. pptx. files to your website
- Compatibility with WordPress, allowing you to send Excel sheets and PowerPoints
- Great for those familiar with 365 services
Cons
- You can not convert documents within the service
- You may need to pay for some Office services in order to get all service options
- A Microsoft account is needed to configure everything
